THE SACRAMENT OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST

Preparation
To prepare for Communion we must keep our minds and hearts on spiritual things.

Prayer
When we come forward to receive, we should repeat the Communion prayer, which every Orthodox Christian should try to memorize.

Reverence
We approach the Holy Communion ‘with fear of God, faith and love’, knowing that our bodies and souls will become one with Christ.

Acceptance
We hold the red Communion cloth beneath our chin, using it to wipe our lips if necessary. We should open our mouth wide to receive the Holy Communion and not be afraid to close our lips upon the spoon. If there are acolytes holding the cloth, release the cloth and do not try to hand it to the next communicant. Turn toward the Consecrated
Bread (Antidoron), make your cross and take a piece of it.

Return
Return to your seat, remain standing and say a prayer of thanksgiving for this greatest gift of all on earth and in Heaven.

A Special Note from Father Dionysios about Receiving Communion

Please step up close to receive Communion, take the Cloth and place it under your chin.  When receiving the Communion, please open your mouth wide.

Deadline: The Dormition of the Theotokos Monthly Newsletter deadline is the 20th of the previous month. Please submit your materials on time.

Content: Articles, notes and other information of interest for our parish can be sent by mail.

Church Attendance: A regular attendance of the church’s services reflects how seriously you approach your salvation.

Parents with Sunday School children: Children must sit with their families in the front pews, so they will be served Communion first. During the school year, after Communion, children will proceed directly to their classrooms. Please remember that coming to the church late teaches our children bad habits. Make it a point to bring them on time.

THE ORTHODOX ORACLE

 Father’s Challenge

Spring is such a beautiful time of year, especially here in Greensboro, North Carolina. I’ve been working diligently in my yard and it’s exciting to see a transformation. These past weeks my lifeless garden has stirred to life. The dormant dogwoods, azaleas, daffodils and phlox bud and burst into life, with vibrant and amazing colors and delicate fragrance. The grass, nourished by rain and mild weather sheds its dull brown coat and resumes its luxuriant green luster. Truly, gardens can be a visual feast for the senses.

In an area such as the Holy Land, an arid and often rocky place, the image of gardens was a welcome sight. It was a place for travelers to rest under the cool shade of a tree while admiring the beauty of the flowers. Indeed, there are three principal gardens mentioned in Holy Scriptures. Each garden was an oasis of beauty but each became symbolic of something deeper.

“And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man he had formed.” Genesis 2:8

The Garden of Eden was paradise. It was a gorgeous place created by God Himself as a home for Adam and Eve. Yet the Garden of Eden was transformed into a garden of deception, for it was here that the Evil One ensnared Adam and Eve through lies. It also became a garden of disobedience when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. Through this act of disobedience, Eden became a garden of death, as illness and mortality, results of the Fall of Humanity, entered the world.

When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered.” John 18:1

Another Garden mentioned in Scripture is the Garden of Gethsemane. Here Christ and His Apostles gathered after the Last Supper. It was a garden of beseeching, as it was here that Our Lord knelt and agonized in prayer. Yet it was also a garden of negligence, as the apostles slept. And with the arrival of Judas and a multitude of soldiers and officers, that spot became a garden of betrayal. Here the apostles scattered like dried leaves blown in the wind while Christ was bound and led off to His trial and crucifixion.

Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.” John 19:40-41

The Garden Tomb mentioned in the Bible was a quiet place. But it was also a place of death and decay where corpses were buried. Here the body of Christ was sealed in a tomb. Yet Christ, by rising from the dead, transformed that patch of ground into something wonderful. It became a garden of life!

When you next stroll through a garden, remember that in one garden Adam took a fall. In another Jesus took a stand. In one God sought Adam. In another, Jesus sought God. In one Adam hid from God. In another, Jesus emerged from the tomb. In one Satan lead Adam to a tree that led to his death. In another, Jesus went to a tree that led to our life. Christ, through his actions, transfigured the image of gardens into emblems of righteousness, salvation and ever-lasting life!

Interfaith Dialogue

We are beginning a new ministry here at Dormition of the Theotokos. It is an outreach ministry called Interfaith Dialogue. The Risen Christ challenged us to “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.” (Matt.28:19-20) The Orthodox Church possesses the fullness of the True Faith and the richness of a deep apostolic tradition. Our challenge is to witness this to our brothers and sisters in the Triad.

On May 4 at 7:00 p.m. we will be having our first meeting. The subject will be on Deification. Ron Freeman, a convert to the Holy Orthodox Faith like myself, has graciously accepted my request to spearhead the discussion. I invite members of our community to attend as well. It promises to be an enriching experience. It is my heartfelt prayer that God will bless this endeavor and use this new ministry to help spread the Gospel to those hungry for spiritual food which is found in our Holy Orthodox Church.

Christ is Risen!
