JOY

The Junior Orthodox Youth, or JOY, is the ministry to 3rd through 6th grade children of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. The mission and goal of the JOY ministry is to lead our young people into experiencing the Holy Orthodox Faith. By developing a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and becoming active sacramental members of the church, our young people will be equipped with tools necessary to assist them in their journey toward salvation.

At Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church, our JOY leaders are Koulla Remondos and Ginah Soufia.

CHOIR

The Church Choir is an important and vital ministry at Dormition of the Theotokos. Singing by the people enhances the beauty and meaning of the holy services. All people, men, women and children, are always welcomed to join and lend their singing talents to the glory of God. Our parish choir has been recognized for the outstanding dedication and hard work, winning 1st Place at the recent Hellenic Choral Competition in 2006.

Our Choir Director is Kevin Lawrence (KJLawrence@aol.com. )

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

SUNDAY SCHOOL
The Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church has been blessed with many dedicated teachers who strive to ensure that all the youth are given thorough instruction in the Orthodox Faith. The classes are held every Sunday, September through May. In addition to their studies, throughout the year the children enjoy many outings which helps promote Christian fellowship. Children do not have to be Orthodox to attend Sunday School. If you are visiting Greensboro, your children are welcome to attend. When in session, the children line up first to receive the Eucharist and then leave for their class. The head of our Sunday School is Polly Anton.

GREEK SCHOOL
Greek School strives to provide the teachings of the Greek language, history and culture and the Greek Orthodox Faith in a warm, family oriented Christian enviroment. The school is open to adults and children and meets every Tuesday evening at 6:00 P.M.
The head of our Greek School Program is Kiki Tarasidis.

BIBLE STUDY
Holy Scripture is the principal and most honored written record of God's revelation to His people. At Dormition we hold a weekly Bible Study under the guidance of Fr. Dionysios. These sessions are held every Tuesday afternoon from 3:00 - 4:30. Currently we are studying the Gospel of St. Matthew. All are welcome to attend.

ORTHODOX ENRICHMENT
Throughout the year Fr. Dionysios will sponsor monthly talks on various themes. These Orthodox Enrichment Sessions are held on the 2nd Friday of the month at 6:00 P.M. At present we are discussing the development of the Divine Liturgy. Parishioners and visitors are encouraged to come.

CATECHISM
For those interested in learning more about the Holy Orthodox Faith, please speak with Fr. Dionysios. Catechical classes are scheduled on an individual basis.

INTERFAITH DIALOGUE

This is an outreach ministry open to parishioners and non-parishioners. Conducted by Ron Freeman, this ministry aims to promote better understanding of Orthodox Christianity in the Triad through interfaith dialogue.

Altar Boys

If you are a young man between the ages of 8 - 18 you are encouraged to serve in the sanctuary as an altar boy. Service around the holy altar is a wonderful gift to God. Please speak with Fr. Dionysios if you are interested.

PHILOPTOCHOS

The Greek Orthodox Ladies Society is the philanthropic heart of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Philoptochos literally means "friends of the poor" and its mission is: to promote charitable, benevolent and philanthropic outreach, to preserve the sanctity of life and family, to perpetuate and promote our Greek Orthodox Faith and traditions. Our Philoptochos Chapter is very involved in aiding the poor, the destitute, the hungry and is ever ready to offer assistance to anyone who may need the help of the church. Women of all ages are encouraged to join this important ministry of the church. Catherine Stuman (jstuman@traid.rr.com) is this year's Philoptochos President.
